Compact dock, thyrse sorrel

Rumex thyrsiflorus compact dock

Because of its dark pink to red colored and bright inflorescences, and heights of up to 1.2 meters, compact dock (Rumex thyrsiflorus) is a hard plant to overlook. It is also called thyrse sorrel.

Rumex thyrsiflorus

Rumex thyrsiflorus grows perennially and can bloom from May to August. Its natural range includes most of Asia and Europe. In some North American regions, this member of the knotweed family (Polygonaceae) occurs growing wild (source).

Compact dock grows in meadows, on embankments, along highways, and along roadsides. It also tolerates mineral soils and does better with dry sites than its European relatives such as Rumex acetosa (common sorrel) or Rumex obtusifolius (broad-leaved dock).
