Echeveria gibbiflora Purple Pearl

Echeveria gibbiflora, like many other species of its genus, has no English name. In Spanish it is called donkey’s ear echeveria (oreja de burro) or cattle’s tongue echeveria (lengua de vaca).

Much better known than the wild type, are the cultivars in which it participates. Along with Echeveria potosina, it is a parent species of the popular Echeveria “Perle von Nürnberg”.

From Echeveria gibbiflora cultivars with green or silvery leaves are available.

The flower spike can grow up to 50 centimeters high, depending on the cultivar. The rosettes can reach diameters of up to 20 centimeters.

The wild type is native to Mexico and Guatemala.

How to care for Echeveria gibbiflora

Well suited are locations where Echeveria gibbiflora is exposed to the sun for at least three hours a day. It can spend the summer in the garden or on the balcony, but does not tolerate frost.

As a soil, standard substrates for cacti and other succulents can be used. Or mixtures of potting soil, bird sand, clay granules or pumice gravel.

When watering, it is important that the root ball is allowed to dry out or nearly dry out between waterings. Echeveria gibbiflora does not like waterlogging.

From spring to late summer, liquid fertilizer for cacti or green plants can be applied occasionally.

If Echeveria gibbiflora should bloom, then cool overwintering at 41 to 50 °F (5 to 10 °C) is helpful.
